The Culinary Institute of America was the next step for her after she graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in English and Communications in the fall of 2004 from Canisius College Buffalo NY. The Culinary Institute of America has been a great adventure. It was impossible to take enough pleasure from the experience. Following her graduation, Chef Burrell was able to spend a full period of time in Italy attending an Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners and working in La Taverna del Lupo in Umbria as well as La Bottega del 30 a one-Michelin-starred restaurant in Tuscany. Burrell gained a greater appreciation of Italian culture and cuisine during her stay in Italy, which has influenced the way she cooks. Burrell was a Garden of Dreams Foundation Advisory Board member, which aims to increase living conditions for children who face obstacles. Burrell also serves as a Juvenile Disease Research Foundation (JDRF) celebrity ambassador, and is a vocal advocate for awareness of the dangers of childhood diabetes. As a guest speaker and mentor, she travels around the U.S. to share her passion for cooking as well as her profession.
